Do you still have your speech therapy textbooks from graduate school? Have you been wondering what to do with them? You can support the development of our profession in Africa by donating your old textbooks to the University of Health and Sciences in Ho, Ghana. They are creating a Smiles for Speech library for students since they only have access to very few books related to speech therapy. Here’s what they need:
- Speech therapy textbooks
- Occupational therapy textbooks
- Therapy materials
All that the students currently have are the old textbooks from the head of the department plus what she can download from the web.
They especially need books on strategies for working with people with aphasia, brain injury, progressive neurological disease. Also books on Neurodevelomental disorders and treatment. Multilingualism also needed.
OT books on sensory processing or development of fine motor skills/ activities of daily living.
They will also accept old assessments (but if it’s the CELF- only the the fourth edition). All kind of old therapy materials are accepted.
Smiles for Speech is an organization that works to help students with disabilities all over the world. Right now they are focused Project Ghana 2020 and they will be traveling to Ghana in July to train and mentor new graduates in speech and occupational therapy. You could potentially even join them and volunteer!
If you would like to donate your books, Smiles for Speech will reimburse the cost of the shipping (mail them USPS “media mail” or “book rate” for a lower shipping cost). Mail them to by March 20, 2020:
