Speech is Beautiful

What Did You Call Me? ;)

About me

23 May
You wouldn’t think a two sound last name would be hard for my students to produce, but it can be! You know, I get such a kick out of what my students call me!

This year I decided to have some fun with it and so I put together a silly (but educational!) display on the front of my desk. It shows all the words that rhyme with “Wu” with a red X on them. It’s a cute way to remind students of rhyming words. Featured words are “boo, moo, two, shoe, flew, stew, two, and ewe.”

BUT…

I’m most commonly called “Mrs Boo.” I think it has to do with the fact that in Spanish the “W” is not frequently used in isolation. In fact, I only hear when it’s in a blend like “agua” or “guantes.”

I’m also called “Mrs Moo.” I should be clear that no one is making fun of me. That one makes me laugh too much!

After Mrs. Moo, I’m often called “Mrs Chew.” I do not understand that at all!

Last year one student always called me Mrs. Wolf. Huh?!

But the funniest yet happened just a few weeks ago. A student saw me in the hallway and said, “Hi, Mrs. Woop!”

Yep, I’m Mrs “Woop” (There it is!) **insert fun dance moves here**

When I moved to New York from further south and started working in schools with multilingual students, I noticed that some of them who were receiving speech therapy were demonstrating improved articulation skills- with a Southern accent! I started working on making my own accent less regional because of that! But I never got a cute nickname like you!
