How to Incorporate STEM Challenges into Speech Therapy

Education

24 Aug

Pulling kids from class for speech therapy means that they miss classroom instruction. By law they cannot miss reading and math, so that means they miss science or social studies. Since speech therapy happens at the same time every week, kids miss the same class over and over. Of course, if a student is receiving speech therapy it means that their communication disorder is severe enough to impact their education, which prioritizes speech therapy as part of their education.

However, students don’t have to miss out on science during speech therapy. STEM challenges can be used to address a variety of speech therapy goals including:

  • Science Vocabulary
  • Sequencing Event
  • Describing Using Adjectives
  • Answering WH-Questions
  • Asking WH-Questions

To get you started I created a STEM challenge pack that gives you a road map to start incorporating science fun into your sessions. Fifteen STEM challenges including:

  • Gravity
  • Eclipse
  • Displacement
  • Classification
  • Liquid or Solid
  • Density
  • Space Jobs

Grab it now to use science in speech therapy, increase student engagement during speech therapy and make teachers and administration happy that students who miss science still get a little science.
