Why is Matching an Important Pre-Reading Skill?
Matching is a vital pre-reading skill because it teaches kids to recognize patterns. Pattern recognition helps kids find similarities and differences between pictures. That skill is transferrable to looking at letter shapes and leads to learning how to decode.

What are Boom Cards?
Have you tried using Boom cards yet? Boom Learning is a platform where you can obtain digital materials that are digital and online to use in sessions with students. The platform is great for students who are working both online and in-person. It seems pretty obvious that it would be easy to share a screen over zoom and give mouse control to students to participate. But to use this in-person you can simply display the boom learning website on a laptop or iPad screen. Using a screen in in-person therapy is perfect because it’s easy to clean.
I have a ton of free boom card decks in my store so check them out here: Sarah Wu’s Boom Learning Store. But I first want to talk about my free matching games for kids. Simply go to Boom Learning, set up an account for free, and make sure to add my free decks to your library. Start here:
- Watercolor Flowers Free Matching Game
- Watercolor Fruit Free Matching Game

That’s just the beginning of what my Boom learning store contains. And I just keep adding to it! It’s worth trying out the Boom learning platform if you have never checked it out because it is so interactive and fun for kids. Trying free decks is a great way to play around and experiment! Make sure to explore my Boom store and follow my store too for updates!
