How to Learn R Sound Speech Therapy

The R sound in English is one of the most difficult sounds to produce. Because of that, many older students in speech therapy are working on R. Speech-language pathologists work on R a lot. Many SLPs can be frustrated in R therapy because it takes a long time to make progress for many kids. It is a difficult sound to teach because of the tongue placement.

Spoiler alert: my son recently got his R sound! We are thrilled! My son (who is 9 years old and in third grade) recently got his R in conversation! In this video I go through when I started therapy at home with him… and when I turned him over to another professional to continue.

Articulation Errors and Orthodontic Treatment

I go through how a recommendation to see an orthdontist led to a light bulb moment for me. He hasn’t started orthodontic treatment (even though he is going to need a lot of work in there), but he still progressed and mastered R. From start to finish it was about two years total. My son worked with Dr Dawn Moore CCC-SLP and if you want to know more about her, you can check out her website here or on Instagram here.
