Speech is Beautiful

31 Aug

One of the things I love most is finding activities that serve multiple purposes. I need something that keeps kids engaged, ties into academic content, and still lets me target the speech and language goals I’m working on. That’s exactly what I had in mind when I created my new Coloring Pages Printable Pack.

This resource combines the simplicity of black-and-white coloring pages with built-in opportunities for language, vocabulary, and conversation. It’s flexible enough for whole group, small group, or one-on-one sessions and can be adapted for a variety of student needs.

What’s Inside

The pack includes 32 pages total, with 16 different habitat scenes. For each habitat, you’ll get two versions:

  • Cut-Out Version: The animals are separate from the background so students can color, cut, and move them around. This makes it easy to incorporate pretend play, sequencing, and storytelling into your sessions.
  • Scene Version: The animals are placed within the habitat. Their names are listed on the side, and I included two simple questions to spark conversation and help you target WH-questions, vocabulary, and descriptive language.

Here are the habitats included:

  • Arctic
  • North Pole
  • Desert 1
  • Desert 2
  • The Farm
  • The Forest 1
  • The Forest 2
  • Mountains
  • The Jungle
  • The Rainforest
  • Coral Reef
  • Marine Life
  • The Ocean
  • The River
  • The Pond
  • The Savanna

How SLPs Can Use These Pages

  • Target Vocabulary: Each page introduces animals and environments that may be new to your students, making it easy to expand their word knowledge.
  • Practice WH-Questions: The conversation prompts give you a natural way to ask who, what, where, and why questions as students color.
  • Encourage Storytelling & Sequencing: With the cut-out version, students can act out little plays with the animals — perfect for practicing beginning, middle, and end or for building narrative skills.
  • Support Mixed Groups: While one student is working on fine motor coloring, another can be labeling animals, and another can be answering conversation questions.
  • Reinforce Academic Connections: Tie the activity into science units on ecosystems, animals, and habitats, so students are making connections across the curriculum.

Why It Works

Sometimes the simplest activities spark the most creativity. Because these pages are in black and white, they’re easy to print and low-prep. Students love the coloring aspect, but you’ll love how much language you can pull from a single page.
